We are reducing our hours beginning May 19th. Saturday we will be open 9am-noon with appointments available for pick up or drop off after these hours, and Monday to Friday will remain 10am-5pm.

Upholstery Seminar a Great Success!!

Last night Paint It Like New! Inc. hosted our first upholstery seminar with Staci Edwards of Switch Studio’s. Our students attentively watched Staci upholster a “drop in seat.” We purchased two chairs from the Re-Use Centre in Burlington. We left one completely unchanged and the second chair had a re-spray courtesy of PILN in the ever popular CC-40 Cloud White from Benjamin Moore. Staci then chose a beautiful cream and orange outdoor fabric…..very on trend! Staci’s attention to detail in both her work and her teaching is commendable! We all unanimously agreed that although we thought we new a lot about upholstery, we really didn’t. Whether I choose to handle my next project myself or simply ask Staci, I know a lot more about the quality of what lies beneath the fabric and also the quality of the fabric itself! Be sure to look for our final reveals in the coming weeks.

Quite the transformation

We found this beautiful old table out by the road in the industrial complex by Paint it Like New! It was love at first sight… rose coloured glasses is an understatement, but I was hooked! I loved the architechural arches and balister style legs. The only problem, maybe not the ONLY one, but the biggest eye sore was the table top. It had gauges and chuncks missing from it and you probably wouldn’t want to set anything down on it, especially not anything edible. The first step was to remove the table top (see picture below):

Now that the fun part was over, (I personally enjoyed peeling the boards back and knocking them out!) the hard work began. I went to a lumber store and purchased some wide plank barnboard, or unfinished knotty pine for the lumber conessieurs, some screws, and a few two by four’s. We re-framed the inside of the table to give it support then replaced the end pieces, filled the holes, added some height to the legs of the table, painted it, and then gave it an all over distressed finish.

We’re so happy to announce that we’re collaborating with our friends at Switch Studio to host a fun event – And you’re invited!

Join us on April 19^th, 2012 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm {or 9:30pm if we get a little chatty} at Paint It Like New http://paintitlikenew.com/, 1254 Plains Road East, Unit 1A, in Burlington. At the event, Janet Hamilton, President of Paint It Like New will be giving a crash course on how to maximize impact with colour choices and furniture selection, as well as talking colour trends for 2012.

Staci Edwards, Designer and President of Switch Studio , will be discussing how to choose fabric for upholstering projects, trends in upholstery for 2012, and what to look for when deciding to reupholster a piece. Staci will also be giving a demonstration on how to reupholster a drop in seat chair!
Some of the techniques she’ll be showing can be used on many different chairs, so you’ll be able to apply them to your own projects at home. You’ll be able to see first hand what a little paint and fabric can do for an inexpensive chair – See the before and after of these chairs live at the event!

And no event would be complete without cookies! A sweet cookie platter will be provided by Elm Hill Cookies for all to enjoy. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be served.

Nautical Nonsense

We wanted to do a cottage project in preparation for the warm weather (fingers crossed) so we racked our brains…Pun intended! We picked up house numbers, and a board at a local hardware store, cleats from a boat shop and some rope. We then sprayed the board and spaced out our numbers and cleats evenly. Once the hardware was on, we tied the ropes and we now had a great piece for a boathouse or cottage. Purchase this piece through our Upcycle page for $75.

Make a “Menu” board for your kitchen or cottage, a scoreboard for your man cave, or a chalk board for your kids playroom!

Here’s what you’ll need:

An old frame

Chalk board paint (available in a rainbow of colours)

MDF board cut to fit your frame

Caulking or Dap

Something heavy (You’ll need it to sit ontop of the board once it’s caulked)

1. Find an old frame that you love

2. Paint the frame whatever colour you’d like (we sprayed ours in high gloss black- inspired by a House and Home photograph). Give it 2 coats of paint with ample drying time, allow to cure for a few days.

3. Paint you MDF piece (cut it to fit inside the frame) with chalk board paint (we chose black)

4. Put the MDF board inside the frame and caulk around the back seem to secure the board, then place a heavy object on top and let it dry over night.

5. Hang your chalk board and use it as a reminder, an inpsirational quote art piece, or a functional grocery list.
